A Miraval, studio d’enregistrement légendaire, quand l’ingénieur du son Patrice Quef enregistrait Jon Anderson

I have truly magical memorable moments at Miraval…Patrice was the most gentle soul, and a wonderful artist behind the mixing sound board…we are both 70 years old now, but my memory of being in Miraval is very strong and very special.
I spent many wonderful times at Miraval, I would always rent a horse and sleep in the small chapel bedroom..I felt as though I was a true musician there, constantly inventing and hearing new ideas in the music..I also painted watercolors and of course as soon as I saw the big window in the studio, I wanted to create something..

I would wake early every morning and go for a horseback ride into the forest, then back, for a very typical French breakfast..such incredible happy days…we worked 10 hours every day..for 3 weeks…never stopping…I had no feeling of what day it was or what year..

We recorded the music and songs for 2 projects..”The life and times of Marc Chagall ». And A True Fairy Tale’…which ending musically with Patrice and I end up inside the tower with microphone’s everywhere, recording fireworks aimed at the tower, to give the effect of a wonderful finale to the symphonic ‘Faeric Dance’…I think we drank a lot of wine for that evening..

The recording still sounds amazing like surround sound….The music for both projects reflected my open spirit and happiness, most of the music was performed with Patrice’s good friend Jacques Loussier, a truly gifted musician who had invited me to come and record there….we spent a lot of time laughing at the world and just how wonderful and lucky we were to spend time in the most secret place in the world, Studio Miraval.

When members of Yes Recorded years later, there it was a different atmosphere…very regimented..the producer needed to make hit record at that time, it was so important…I rented my horse as usual, but it was a hot summer, the flies would come in the studio, (the stable was below)…creating havoc…so the horse had to go, and in a way the recording never had the beauty of my first time with Patrice at Miraval…such is the way of life…you cannot force a good time, ‘it just happens’..

Mes souvenirs de Miraval sont vifs et uniques. J’ai vécu des moments vraiment magiques à Miraval. Patrice était l’âme la plus douce qui soit, et un artiste prodigieux derrière la console… On a tous les deux 70 ans maintenant, mais mes souvenirs de Miraval demeurent vifs et uniques.

J’ai passé des heures merveilleuses à Miraval, j’y louais un cheval et dormais dans la chambre de la petite chapelle. J’avais l’impression d’être un véritable musicien là-bas, inventant constamment et me laissant pénétrer par des idées insoupçonnées dans la musique. Je peignais aussi des aquarelles, et bien sûr dès que je voyais la grande fenêtre du studio, je voulais créer quelque chose.

Je me levais tôt le matin pour aller faire une promenade à cheval dans la forêt, avant de rentrer prendre un petit-déjeuner typiquement français… des jours tellement heureux… on travaillait dix heures par jour… pendant trois semaines… on s’arrêtait jamais… J’ignorais quel jour nous étions, quelle année…

On a enregistré la musique et les chansons de deux projets… « The life and times of Marc Chagalll” et “A True Fairy Tale”… qui se termine musicalement avec Patrice et moi. On a fini dans la tour remplie de microphones, qui enregistraient des feux d’artifices lancés en direction de la tour pour obtenir l’effet du merveilleux finale symphonique de « Faeric Dance »… Il est bien possible que nous ayons bu beaucoup de vin ce soir-là.

L’enregistrement sonne toujours de façon incroyable, comme du surround. La musique des deux projets reflétait mon ouverture d’’esprit et ma joie, et une grande partie de la musique a été faite avec le proche ami de Patrice, Jacques Loussier, un musicien très doué qui m’avait invité à venir enregistrer là-bas… on a passé des heures à rire du monde et à nous dire quelle chance nous avions d’être dans cet endroit magique, le Studio Miraval.

Des années plus tard, quand des membres de Yes y ont enregistré, l’atmosphère était différente… très régimentée… le producteur avait besoin d’un hit à l’époque, c’était tout ce qui comptait… Je louais mon cheval comme d’habitude, mais l’été était chaud, les mouches s’engouffraient dans le studio (l’étable était juste en dessous)… semant le chaos… donc j’ai dû me passer du cheval, et d’une certaine manière, l’enregistrement n’a jamais atteint la beauté de cette première fois avec Patrice à Miraval… Ainsi va la vie… on ne peut pas forcer un bon moment, « ça arrive juste. »
